Semen Collection and Freezing Service

Equine Embryos Inc. has state-of-the-art technology and equipment to provide its clients with semen collection and semen freezing services. We offer the stallion owner on-farm semen collection, semen evaluation, semen shipping and semen freezing. We have experience in collecting and freezing semen from high-profile stallions from the Canadian Equestrian Team, as well as young stallions prior to the beginning of their careers.

Many horse owners dream of having offspring from geldings which are often top performers. Stallion owners face a difficult decision when they castrate their stallions to use them in the sport. To freeze semen from these horses provides an opportunity to have offspring after castration.

Costs to the Stallion Owner
Semen Freezing	$500 per collection (average of 15 doses). Includes semen collection, evaluation, and freezing tests). Only charged if freezing is successful (more than 50% motility post thaw). Each insemination dose contains at least 500 million motile sperm after thawing. When the semen does not freeze well, we will charge only for the semen collection and a call fee.
Semen Collection and Evaluation	$235
Cooled semen shipping	$235 plus $35 for the disposable shipping container. Equitainer (non-disposable shipping container) rental is also available.
Farm call fee	Depends on location and number of stallions. Please call for an estimate.
Semen storage	$3 per dose per month.

All prices are in Canadian dollars. Add 7% for GST.

Procedure for scheduling a semen collection / freezing.
1. Call or e-mail explaining your plans.
2. Fax the information regarding your stallion (fax 519-632-5191) including name, registration number and breed, so we can print the straws in which the semen will be packaged.
3. We will call you back to arrange for an appointment.
4. For the actual collection our mobile laboratory will visit your farm to collect the stallion. All you need to have is a place with good footing to collect the stallion, and of course, the stallion.
5. We bring a phantom mare (or dummy) to collect the semen from the stallion. We also bring the necessary containers and equipment to ship semen or to freeze it and store it.
6. We also can arrange to store the semen for you. Semen can be insured upon request. Semen is stored in liquid nitrogen at -196 degrees Celsius where it can be preserved for years.
